8.5Y RS3

It never looked good in the flesh. The first pics were nice when you didn't realise how huge the thing was. It looked like it would be similar to A3 in size and I was like ":flushed:" when I first saw it in real life. Like the blueprints were in a wrong scale. Also all the details look very awkward when the car is even slightly dirty.

Our Audi's got a brilliant product when it comes to full electric sporty car. At least until we get to talk about the range, let alone pricing...

Have you considered the new Hyundia Ioniq 5N? By far and away the most exciting car around at the moment imo. 641 bhp and no "lag" (0-62 in 3.4 sec)!
If I was convinced about full EV (I'm not, yet) and I had the sort of money required to buy/lease a new RS3 then I would definitely go for one of these.

Yes. It was the car that I was waiting for and then realised that it is enormous.

Those pics still look like renders with some minor imperfections. Really close to the real thing compared to the previously posted video but have to see the official pictures before judgement. The fins under the headlights seem to look a bit too thin and the rear diffuser reminds me of a diaper. Overally it's not bad but not an improvemet over the original design either.

I never liked the blanked out 'vents' in the 8Y To me it looked cheap and reminds me of the vac-formed sheet plastic we used to fill holes with back in the day. I prefer the new one but they could have done better. What's wrong with a good fake diffuser or just a plain bumper like the standard car. Oval exhausts and rear spoiler is all it needs.

At least they have gone back to a central dial. Hopefully ditched all the hockey-sticks and ***-about face runways for good. Another re-inventing the wheel by a committee completely failed.

Guess the Bimmer fanboys aren't having any better time lol. The new M5 was released today. Thing weighs almost 2,5 tonnes and looks like a handheld vacuum cleaner. Angry one.

Suddenly I think the RS3 FL pictures look pretty decent.

And slower to 62mph than the outgoing M5 Comp.

Re: Hyundai Ioniq 5N: Yes, I have a feeling that I may come to the same conclusion. I am going to look at one in the showroom tomorrow, but reading more about it there are a lot of comments about its sheer size and weight. It is designed to look like a hatchback, but looks (especially on photos) can obviously be deceiving..

I think it’s a improvement and they have managed to make the interior feel more upmarket than the S3.

Quicker lap than the M2 is impressive.

Ionic 5 works best as a family EV imo.

Not a small car at all.

^ Like I said, looks like Ionic 5 was designed in a wrong scale. The similarity of the basic shape is almost disturbing.

Have I missed something
Why are we comparing a 5 pot 2.5 with an electric ionic5?

Valid question, but for some the alternative to a DAZA/CZGB is not a DNWA/DNWC but to go electric.

I went through that when I missed the boat on a new DAZA and drove the DNWA. I was about to buy a Polestar when a car of my exact spec came up approved used. There are lots of reasons I can think people go from RS3 to Electric,

Similar performance (Polestar is 4wd 400 bhp)
Some have better interiors (personally I prefer the Polestar interior to the 8Y)
Because it has been done to death by every muppet, loud exhausts with pops and bangs have lost their sparkle, less acceptable these days, bit like smoking and rolling coal in a diesel.
Insurance is similarly stupid these days for either.
The RS3 'scene' has become a bit toxic these days with how a few bad eggs act/drive. Many are done with that and fancy a change and not the next big thing.
The RS3 has always been a bit of a straight line blunt instrument and is more similar to an electric than something like an M2 or Cayman.

I am glad I found my DAZA but many times I sit on long runs more impressed with 40+mpg than its noise or 0-60 time, but that may be because I'm wrong side of 50 but that is not rare either in RS3 owners.

Has anyone bought a EV?

Im guessing they’re all on lease?

I briefly looked a Taycans due to their price but decided against it.

This soooo easily applies to RS3’s too

Residuals through the floor, anyone buying one with their own money must be insane.

lol same applies to RS3’s everyone jumping out of them because insurance has gone up PCP rates up and there’s a rumour petrol is about to start moving up too.

100% agree, I switched to electric, but bought 15 months old with 6k miles for 48% of RRP..... Some of the loses against new on the market are insane, must be all lease company cars, can't believe any private buyer would buy a new electric car

The best way, some great discounts on EV’s I bought the missus a 5 month old EV for a bargain price.

Can't even trade them in Sean, dealers won't take them.

Lots of mis-information out there I’m afraid John.

2 EV’s here……..zero complaints.
I agree. I changed my RS3 out for the Polestar 2 because of a large change in my daily commute and actually really like it for what it was bought for. I know that it's never going to be as fun or exciting as the RS3, but I knew that going in. Residual value's are terrible right now, I don't think that anyone could argue against that, but if you go in with your eyes open to it then you're not going to be surprised.

The build quality on it is really good, the range is more than enough for me (real world 200-240 miles out of a 90% charge mainly on 70 mph roads which it's not most efficient on) and plenty poke for normal driving. Amazingly it even goes round corners alright. Insurance was significantly cheaper for the Polestar and since the end of January and 6,000 miles I've used less in electricity than I would in two tanks of Momentum for the RS3.

Would I buy an electric car as a fun option? Definitely not. Are they good for just a relaxed commuter? Absolutely. Do I hope that synthetic fuels mean we stay with ICE? 100%.

I can’t believe Al Gore managed to make so many people believe carbon dioxide is a harmful gas.

Electric cars are great for what they are.

But they are not environmentally friendly or ethical.

Apparently it’s the reason we should be driving 2 tonne plus “cars” with awful winter range and child slave mined batteries.

Its ok though because the Chinese own the African slave pits not us.

Dunno about all that, we chose EV’s as our next cars because we fancied a change……as for 2 ton plus cars, ours aren’t, plenty of petrol performance cars that are well over 2 tons tho.

Agreed, mine isn't 2 ton (not miles off though...). I get a solid 180 miles from 90% charge in winter which is more than I need as I can just top it up over night if I think it might be a good idea. £3 in electricity for 180 miles versus £75 for 230 miles in the RS3 is a trade off I'm willing to make for a commuter.

For a commuter, personally I think the Mazda CX30 is going in the right direction, not something seen since the i3 and Ampera. A small battery to cover the daily commute (for most people the 50 miles is enough) quickly charged at home each night, then a small engine driving a generator as a range extender when you need to go further.

Ditches the weight of a usual hybrid gearbox and running gear, or a 400 mile battery. Fully electric drivetrain and no range anxiety

They are doing this with HGVs, small battery, electric motors for torque and a smaller diesel engine running at peak efficiency driving a generator. Machinery engines have been driving pumps that inturn drive wheels for years and get some staggering efficiency from the engines. Makes much more real-world common sense than the likes of the Tesla 18 wheeler.

Efficiency is what has been missing from electric cars for a while and getting worse. The Lotus is case in point.

I think this is why there has been a sudden resurgence of R&D into petrol and diesel engines by several manufacturers.

The current battery tech for EV's is just not there for me... Yet. There has to be better range/storage cell capacity for them to win out long term AND get significantly cheaper to the average punter.
Us old gits on here (im 46) old enough to remember Beatamax vs VHS back in the day? I see the current EV tech as Beetamax... With a VHS or DVD equivalent needing a push in development which will come. The residuals on current EV cars are shocking, who buys a 3yrd old iPhone... Its the same for EV cars lol.

I had an 8U Rsq3 which recently turned 10yrs...was a special motor to me and the engine was/is a hoot. Anyone who is a "petrol head", and im sure we all are hence we are on this forum has that longing for the sound of a decent ICE.

I wanted what probably will be my last ICE car i own if i look after it before Greta Thurnberg brigade makes it impossible to own ICE.

For that reason, i changed my 8U for the F3 Rsq3 and dont regret it one bit, the 5pot is magic. Hopefully in 5-10yrs, that DVD will be a good option... But then id probably want Blue-ray instead lol

It is one of the things putting me off an EV. Not the electric bit but the thought of good hardware left to rot because of outdated/unsupported software, just look at Windows 10. Goes for some modern ICE too these days. It is why I have a couple of machines with no software whatsoever
and im sure we all are hence we are on this forum has that longing for the sound of a decent ICE.
Don't get me wrong my DAZA is going nowhere, that engine is a keeper, but if it did I would not try to replace it, more likely EV to sit in traffic and a flat six for when I felt like it. Mate had MX5 BBR conversion to ITBs and the induction noise is addictive, all for less than the depreciation on most modern cars
For that reason, i changed my 8U for the F3 Rsq3 and dont regret it one bit, the 5pot is magic.
RSQ3 may be the current sweet spot as it still retains many of the old interior buttons and bits. Bit like the T-Roc R and Golf R.

It's a shame as I think there's a lot to appreciate in the 8Y. For me, it's a great balance of everyday useability with little or no compromises plus enough performance for any road situation in the UK nowadays. All new cars are getting strangled with OPFs and every review harks back to the good old days when you could hear the 5 pot / straight 6 / V6 / V8 sing. Maybe I'm getting old but I think it still sounds decent with the valves open and I wouldn't want any more. I was never one for pops and farts anyway! The insurance hikes are a pain but affecting most high-performance ICE cars.
