A3/S3 8V Owners... your car history?

Wow that is quite a distance away!!

Just a drive to the airport and hop on any convenient direct flight, not too bad. Did it for six years, 2 to 4 times a year; changed jobs this past summer and don't work with any companies in the U.K. anymore (bummer).

Passed my test in 1996

The Past
1 - G reg Ford Escort 1.3 GL in Tesco Value blue - wrote that off in two weeks
2 - Shitroen ZX 1.4i - wish I wrote that off in two but HGF killed it after 6 months
3 - Honda Civic EK 1.4i - brand new - in 'OAP having a midlife crisis' bright blue
|
|
|
19 - All Hondas. Had everything from Hormone Replacement Vehicles (two of those!), two Cruvvs - worth mentioning include...
- Civic EP3 that I spent an obscene amount on tuning, keeping it N/A and got nearly 260bhp and a lot of chassis work. Many hours spent at Santa Pod giving it ten tenths and never once let me down.
- S2000 that I did some tweeking with and had some really fun trips in.
- Civic FD2 - unbelievably good car that needs to driving hard to 'get' - best handling car I owned - would muller the S2k and EP3 on a track - although the EP3 was quicker in a straight line because of the mods.

The main reason I've owned so many Hondas is that I've never had a breakdown - petrol, diesel, heavily modded, nothing outside of the odd recall have they given me anything above standard services.

The Present
20 - My current S3...which has started the slippery slope of modding that I went through with the EP3 - It my second favourite car that I've owned (FD2 being first)...and it's a very close second.

The Future
Either 911 or R8...but that's probably two years down the line

:grimacing:

I've only had 2 cars and my third one is on the way, but here goes anyway!

2013 - 2002 "52" Mercedes-Benz A140 Avantgarde, bought as a car to learn in. Thanks Dad!
2014 - 2014 "64" Ford Fiesta Studio 1.25, first actual car that I bought myself. I love it, and still do.
2017 - 2017 "17" Audi A3 SE 1.0 TFSI, when its delivered anyway on 31/03/2017.

Thought i'd go a bit more upmarket than my current Ford, although I know its only an SE trim but if it gets me in to the world of Audi i'm happy... the offer was too good to refuse from Hull Audi!

Can anyone explain for the non-UK/Europe audience the significance of your number plates, i.e. when someone says "I had a 32 plate so and so" is that...special?

Past my test, um some time ago, can't quite remember. Anyways

F reg Escort
V - Focus
02 - Focus
55 - Fiesta ST
55 - ST
08 - Mondeo Tit X
10 - Mondeo Tit X Sport
61 - " " " "
12 Focus 1.0
12 Focus ST Estate
15 S3 Saloon (Although currently driving the GF's 15 Mondeo)

The Escort went through a puddle (It was very very deep) and sorta died.
Mostly trouble free motoring until I hit the S3.
If I had to pick the one car from this list to keep, I'd go for the ST Estate. Although it was black and I ain't no avid cleaner.

In my lifetime we've had 3 systems.
They all relate to the year the car was registered.
But just to confuse things the years used to run from 1st Aug to 1st Aug, now it changes every six months (hang in there).

Presently, the system changes number on 1st March and 1st Sept.
March 2016 is represented by 16 on the plate then 66 from Sept 2016. March 2017 will be 17, then 67 in Sept.

Clear as mud eh. The following link may help?

Interesting, thanks. So in California (not all states are the same) a standard license plate has a number then three letters then three numbers and they're just sequential so it would start 0AAA000 and eventually you get 0AAA999 then 0AAB000 and so on. My Golf R I had before the S3 when I registered it in June (I moved from Maryland so had to reg the car here in Ca) was 8TVPxxx. But then there are specialty plates that are different colors or backgrounds or for special purposes like Amateur Radio operator that are individually numbered within heir own series, and then commercial vehicles have their own numbering systems as well. The year/month are added via stickers to the plate not unlike you have your tax discs. The month sticker is permanent and tells the month in which the car was first sold and then the year stickers are provided every year after paying registration.

For my S3 I ordered a custom 60s Heritage Plate which has a black background and yellow text to match the car. Don't have it yet though, won't come till probably March.

Thanks for the insight. Despite the number of times I've been to the US i hadn't appreciated what the system in each State was.
We have private or cherished (speciality as you say) here too. But it's really just buying plates which represent a name, initials or words for example.

Some awesome cars on here. Myself, Iv been through quite a few cars, ranging from MX5's,MGF's, various VW Campers to old Landies. I used to get really bored after around 6months so used to just sell them and move on. This and that i used to buy VW vans/campers, do them up and sell them on for a profit. This little business got me through Uni.

Anyway, heres my highlights & ones that really stick in my memories.

MGB GT I had at Uni. She was falling to bits but somehow mechanically got me through Uni!

VW Beetle with a Golf GTI engine in the back. Went like skink. Got me through my surfer faze whilst i lived in Kernow!

Alfa GTV. Loved this car. 1st trip to Portugal went through the Pyrenees in January. Snow everywhere. felt like a top gear race.
10866861584 265699edba o

TVR S. Pile of crap. didn't have it long. sounded like 5 harleys! had to wear earmuffs!
10867087034 abaea05d6f o

Smart Roadster Coupe. For me one of the most underrated cars. very lively and a hoot to drive. loved it and is one i shouldn't have sold.
10867223313 56402ed20e o

Z3 M, Amazing car. sold to go travelling!
10867242114 c4e13f6b04 o
Audi TT. Forget which model. Sold it when realised clutch was slipping and was gonna cos around £1,5k. was studying for an MA at the time so not much spare cash!
10867174346 d1ac222a9d o

Scirocco. 2.0TSI DSG. first ever DSG iv had. loved it.
20136737190 63735100ca o

And now the A3. 2nd Audi iv had. proving to be much more reliable than the TT. I am missing the performance though. loving the 60mpg but it does feel a little too much like a normal hatchback for me to keep it for a long time. Maybe an S3 will cure that! Since i was younger i always promised myself i would have a 911 by the time I'm 30 but it hasn't happened yet. Im 33 so i really should just do it!

Yeah its a really nice car. Has to be the Coupe though as the Roadster looks a bit strange IMHO. In reality its quite slow, i think its a 899cc turbo engine but the seating position is really really low so it feels like a little MK1 MX5. 50-60mpg too. Great little things. If i was back in the UK i would buy one and put it in storage. these will go up in value i reckon.

My first car was free from my dad as he has his own company and was upgrading a new company car. The value of the old one was effectively zero so I became heir to a Volvo S40 1.8

Once I ran this into the ground (around 140k miles) I bought a car for the first time. I saw an ad for this A4 3.2 Quattro but it was in Kent. I bought it over the phone without seeing it, let alone driving it. It was from an Audi dealer so I thought it would be ok...

It went pretty quick and made a lovely noise but after nearly 120k miles the timing chain slipped and caused an engine rebuild costing me over £1500 to get fixed. I drove it to 135k miles and then bought a brand new A4 2.0TDI Quattro Black Edition:

It looked the business especially after I got privacy glass but it sounded like a tractor and was no fun to drive compared to the old 3.2 so I endured it for just over 2 years and got my new S3:

interesting to see everyone's car history even though im too young to know what half od the listed cars even look like! so here is my very bland history if you can even call it that.

Passed in September 2015 lol.....

Only had the one car which I have currently which is a 15 plate Fiesta 1.00 125bhp. Lovely little car, nice and nippy for a first car (Nippy enough for a first car etc) I had a black box on for my first year due to insurance being 2.5k if I wished to avoid a black box, definitely not a bad thing to have on whilst you develop road knowledge and the likes, and you could still enjoy the car enough even with it on.

Anyways due to my crap history i'll give you my plan for the future, bet you cant guess what I am wanting next......

So was lucky enough to test drive an S3 just before xmas and absolutely loved it, so much more refined than the fiesta and a lot more puff! Was wanting to go ahead and order one on PCP however the parents were not to keen on my genius idea, so I have no re-considered and I think the new plan is to wait until October (2 years no claims) and by that time I will have a rather huge deposit hopefully to put down on a second hand Facelift model. Only 264 days to go, not that im keeping track.....

Until then I've booked a holiday to magaluf to take my mind off the S3, its clearly working when I still live on this forum reading about them....
